In 1974, Davara Nou, Rawali Gia and Asi Iduhu were the winners of that year’s contest and the recipients of the airway tickets and a two week cultural expedition down under. The trio were accompanied by then Regional Member Josephine Abaijah (now Dame).
Today, Air Niugini maintained that tradition in a sponsorship ceremony with the current 2023 Hiri Hanenamo.
Air Niugini is pleased to support the 50th Hiri Moale Festival which commences in Port Moresby tomorrow, Friday 21st to the 23rd March.
The airline is providing travel for winners and contestants with a mix of domestic and international travel at the value of K75,000.
Air Niugini’s Corporate Communications Manager, Ms Illan Kaprangi during the sponsors’ event this morning said ANG as the national airline is proud to support a festival that signifies cultural inheritance and contributes to tourism in the country.
She said “ Hiri Moale Festival continues to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of the younger generation of Papua New Guineans, especially the Motu Koitabuans whose traditional land on which our capital city is built on.”
Hiri Moale Festival is one of the longest running festivals and is just as old and the airline is. Air Niugini celebrated its 50th years anniversary in November last year.

50 Years, three winners of the Hiri Hanenamo contest won trips to Sydney as part of winning the prizes in the 1974 Hiri Hanenamo contest.
